Electrochemical Cells
- How to build a parallel battery.

There are several ways to set up an electrochemical cell to build a parallel battery. In this demonstration, however, we will be using the "Daniells Cell". In fig-1 the demonstration uses a galvanic cell, by simply clicking on the picture you can view how it would work with that set up.

Calculating the VOLTAGE.

Cu ==>Cu2 + 2e Oxidation half reaction
2e- +Zn2 <== Zn Reduction half reaction

Zn0 ==> Zn2 +2e- .76
2e- + Cu2 <== Cuo .34
Total = 1.10v

The "Daniells Cell"

  • a strip of copper
  • a strip of zinc
  • a large beaker or bowl
  • a porous vase (used as the permeable membrane)
  • Copper Sulfate (CuSO4)
  • Zinc Sulfate (ZnSO4)
  • a liter of distilled water
  • a voltmeter
  • 2 cables with alligator clips

  1. put distilled water into the beaker and the porous vase
  2. add zinc sulfate into the vase
  3. add cupric sulfate into beaker
  4. stir both
  5. place vase into beaker
  6. place the copper strip into the cupric sulfate(the beaker)
  7. place zinc strip into the zinc sulfate(porous vase)
  8. connect the volt meter to both strips to read the voltage (which should come to -1.10v)

Parallel Battery

  • 2 beakers
  • 2 porous vases
  • 2 zinc strips
  • 2 copper strips
  • cupric sulfate
  • zinc sulfate
  • distilled water
  • volt meter
  • 4 alligator clips
  • LED light


  1. make 2 electrochemical cells from procedure #1
  2. take the first alligator clip and clip onto both copper strips
  3. take the second alligator clip and clip onto both zinc strips
  4. the 3rd alligator clips onto one zinc strip
  5. the 4th clips onto the copper strip on the other cell
  6. take the 2 outside clips and connect to volt meter to measure the voltage
  7. then take the clips and connect the wires to the LED light
  8. because of the voltage being so low, the light should NOT light up
